Miamishared values innovative and creative , independant professionals. We embrace the idea of collaboration and inspiration. They were inspired by their own roots and this allows them to share many of the same growing pains and success stories with their fellow start ups and internet companies. What began as an internet company quickly developed into a unique work culture where many employees were already embracing the idea of open workspaces and collaborative initiatives. This inspired the CEO to create a hub where other young and progressive companies can also find an affordable space in which to grow their company.

The main concept behind Miamishared is to bring start-ups and internet companies together in an environment where each can learn, grow, and establish business connections from one another.  This is the backbone of Miamishared.  They continue their bi weekly Pizza Friday, and always add on additional events such as our Caribbean potluck and our Fiesta Friday. These events allow everyone to break away from their strenuous hard work and take a moment to get to know their coworking neighbors. They have been fortunate enough to say that most of the coworkers are familiar with one another and continue their connections beyond Miamishared’s complex. With this their initial target has been met , and new goals have been created. All to benefit the creative minds in Miami searching for a place to work freely.”

Coworking Grand Rapids: The Factory http://workified.com/2010/07/coworking-grand-rapids-the-factory/ http://workified.com/2010/07/coworking-grand-rapids-the-factory/#comments Tue, 13 Jul 2010 18:09:22 +0000 Pat Cheung http://workified.com/?p=902 Company: The Factory

The Factory, viagra 100mg a beautiful coworking space located in Grand Rapids, MI, is not just about sharing desks. They’re building community, making friendships and making Grand Rapids a cooler place to get work done.

Here are their core values:

Collaboration

When we work together good things happen. As we share our ideas, the
opportunity arises for them to be discussed, compared, refined and acted
upon. An environment should promote open collaboration.

Openness

Walls and cubicles hinder communication and sharing. When you share a desk
with someone you gain a unique opportunity to discuss. An environment
should provide a relaxed and inviting feel to drive openness among it’s
participants while remaining conscious of ones privacy and individuality.

Community

If it takes a village to raise a child, why should a business be any
different? Whether you’re an independent worker or an employee of a large
corporation, a sense of community will enrich your work. A space should
foster an aura of comfortable integration; bringing various backgrounds
together to help people create, teach, learn and evolve ideas.

Diversity

By providing a diverse environment we are all better able to understand the
demographics of the marketplace. Occasional challenges, misunderstandings,
and arguments may arise but it is key to sparking creativity and avoiding
groupthink. A space should bring together people with different ideas,
perspectives, and ways of working. New ideas. People from different
backgrounds and all different stages in their life and career.

Work Jelly http://workified.com/2010/06/work-jelly/ http://workified.com/2010/06/work-jelly/#comments Fri, 04 Jun 2010 19:17:44 +0000 Pat Cheung http://workified.com/?p=714

If you work from home or cafe, you’ve probably felt the need to meet and work alongside other like-minded independent professionals every once in awhile. Fortunately, there are other independent professionals feeling the exact same pain. A Coworking membership is one solution for this, but might be too much of a commitment for some people just getting used to the idea of working alongside other people. Another solution for a coworking newbie might be to try Jelly.

In a nutshell, Jelly is a casual working event. It takes place in over a hundred cities where people come together (in a person’s home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. Jelly communities are popping up everywhere in the world, and the best way to find one is probably through the Work at Jelly wiki or through Meetup.com (search for Jelly or Coworking).

The difference between coworking and Jelly is that Jelly typically happens only once or twice a month for any particular location…and it’s also usually free. There are no commitments with Jelly, whereas typical coworking memberships require a one month commitment. Here’s a great little video describing the Jelly vibe:

Citizen Space Coworking http://workified.com/2010/05/citizen-space-coworking/ http://workified.com/2010/05/citizen-space-coworking/#comments Thu, 27 May 2010 17:05:10 +0000 Pat Cheung http://workified.com/?p=614 Company: Citizen Space
Location: San Francisco, help CA
Size: 3500 square feet
Website: www.citizenspace.us

Citizen Space is one of the first spaces of the coworking movement. Citizen Space got its start because the founders, prescription Chris Messina and Tara Hunt, had been working out of their living room and coffee shops…and had been talking about the philosophy of “coworking” for some time. They wanted a space that looked professional and casual all at once, and after finding an affordable space in a great location…Citizen Space was born.

The idea of Citizen Space is to take the best elements of a coffee shop (social, energetic, creative) and the best elements of a workspace (productive, functional) and combine them to give indie workers the chance to have their own, affordable space. Citizen Space was built on coworking philosophy. Their residents (past and present) range from: software engineers, web developers, social media consultants/strategists, graphic designers, product designers, public relations specialists, and sustainable web hosting entrepreneurs.

Top 5 Reasons for Coworking http://workified.com/2010/05/top-5-reasons-for-coworking/ http://workified.com/2010/05/top-5-reasons-for-coworking/#comments Fri, 21 May 2010 18:24:27 +0000 Pat Cheung http://workified.com/?p=532 Blankspaces Coworking

Coworking is redefining how freelancers and independent contractors get work done. In case you don’t know what coworking is, in a nutshell…”coworking allows independent workers to come together in a shared space to get productive.” Typically, you pay a membership fee, whether daily or monthly, and you get to work at an office alongside other coworking members.

It just makes sense. People can work from cafes, homes, or libraries only for so long, until they need an office space alongside other like-minded professionals to stay productive. And that’s exactly why coworking spaces are gaining popularity and popping in every major city. If you’re looking for a coworking space, we at Workified just started compiling a comprehensive coworking directory of every major coworking space around the world (ongoing project)…so go check it out and find a coworking space near you!

Anyways, here’s our top 5 list of reasons why you should start coworking!

Top 5 Reasons for Coworking

1. Productivity

Here’s the scenario: You’re working from home and there are multiple deadlines you’re trying to meet…but, you’re at your home office, the TV is on, the bed looks pretty inviting, the dog wants to play fetch, and you’re working in complete solitude, or worse yet, the kids are screaming and playing in the next room. How do you stay productive in that kind of environment?

Coworking is a pretty good cure for this predicament. A good coworking environment provides an office-like facility conducive to working. Sharing space alongside other like-minded coworkers provides a sense of discipline and encouragement. Much like a gym membership, a coworking membership buys the accountability and discipline that many independent professionals need to stay productive. The old adage is true, you can accomplish more together…than you can alone.

2. Professionalism

You just met a potential new client, and here’s how your phone conversation goes:

Potential Client: I just found your website, and we love your work. We’re totally looking for a reputable vendor that can implement that for us. You guys look very professional.

You: That’s good to hear!

Potential Client: So, can we set an appointment to come over to your office so we can go over the concept, the specs, and the work?

You: Umm, yeah, can we meet at Starbucks? That’s where I work from.

Potential Client: …yeah, let me get back to you on the appointment. There’s couple other vendors we’re considering right now. We’ll be in touch…(click)

Just like how you wouldn’t conduct business without the necessary equipment, cell phone, email, computers, bank account, software, etc…why would you do business without an office? Add a little professionalism to your business by conducting work at a real office environment. Coworking allows you to have a professional public face that augments your professional services.

3. Connect & Collaborate

Working alone is not fun, and usually, not really effective. Coworking not only offers space, but a community. By gathering together like-minded freelancers, entrepreneurs, and independent contractors…much synergy can be found within the diverse skill sets of the coworking members. Web designers can collaborate with web programmers…branding experts can collaborate with PR professionals…UI developers can collaborate with product managers.

A lot of people describe coworking as like being at a barcamp everyday! Well, we don’t know about that, but the core message is true. Coworking provides synergy and endless opportunities for its members to collaborate and work together on projects. Coworking encourages a certain level of diversity among members, while still targeting like minded professionals within the web/mobile industry.

4. Self-Enrichment

You’re smart, but let’s face it, you don’t know everything about everything! Self enrichment is one of the key factors that draws independent professionals to coworking spaces. The benefits to working alongside other intelligent coworkers is obvious in the area of self-enrichment.

In the world of agile programming, one of the core tenets is “Pair Programming”. This method teaches that by working alongside at least one other colleague in a co-located environment, your code becomes better, you develop solutions faster, and you learn more. This philosophy of “working together” is one of the main benefits of coworking.

Coworking recognizes this core desire of members for self-enrichment, and many coworking spaces setup meetups & workshops to specifically help achieve that.

5. Inspiration

Everyone needs inspiration. Whether it’s creative inspiration to design the next award winning website…business inspiration to develop the next Facebook…programming inspiration to write the next Ruby bytecode interpreter…or general inspiration to get outta bed in the morning and get to work…inspiration is a much needed commodity for independent contractors and entrepreneurs.

Once again, community is a great source of inspiration. Much like exercising, for most people, it’s often more inspiring running in a pack than alone, more inspiring lifting weights with several buddies than alone and unspotted, and more inspiring practicing pilates in a group rather than by yourself alone in the living room in front of the TV.
